Exhibition Title
Stremmel Gallery will exhibit new works by Californian artists Marc Katano and Randall Shiroma. The exhibition will consist of new acrylic paintings by Katano and sculptures by Shiroma. Stremmel Gallery will present the Marc Katano / Randall Shiroma exhibit as part of the eighth annual Artown Festival, July 1 - 31, 2003, hosted by the City of Reno. The month long summer arts festival features more than 200 events produced by 75 cultural organizations and businesses in 40 locations city wide.

Southern California artist Marc Katano creates multi-layered acrylic paintings on paper and canvas that employ symbols and forms that would seem to exemplify the temporal beauty of objects found in nature. He states, however, that he is more interested in the "concerns of the traditional painter - dark and light, positive and negative space, composition, foreground and background - but without the recognizable subject matter. I am interested in mark making." His forms "are not inspired by nature (although they do seem to reflect it). Rather, they are a distillation of my mark: the inside and outside wrist movements of the brush." Randall Shiroma is a sculptor who works in a terrazzo medium creating works that also evoke the natural elements and forms of nature. Shiroma's polished and patinated concrete sculptures seem to reflect the mountains, sky and water, while revealing his search for the nature of being and his desire to create a sense of presence.

The opening reception for the Marc Katano / Randall Shiroma will be held on Thursday, July 10, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend the reception, meet the artists and view the exhibition. The show will continue throughout the Artown Festival ending on August 16. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
