Exhibition Title
From November 13 to December 13, Stremmel Gallery will present an exhibition of new works by Reno artist Maurice Nespor and Northern California's Melvin Schuler. The two-man exhibition will feature Nespor's latest mixed media collages, as well as recent sculptural forms in copper on redwood by Schuler.

Maurice Nespor began as an architect in Nevada, working for 30 years in the field before turning to fine art full time. He once said, "A career in architecture has given me discipline for the task and insight into the principles of composition." His formal compositions and geometric shapes and lines are reminiscent of fragmented architectural drawings and models. Nespor employs chine colle, cardboard, and occasional found objects, to which he adds rich areas of color and textural elements. On his large-scale works these textures resemble bas-relief, offering dramatic statements that might give the impression of an aerial landscape.

Melvin Schuler's career has included a remarkable list of exhibitions, commissions and collections, spanning more than 50 years. Some of his tall sculptures begin with drawings inspired by nature or the human form, often combining powerful vertical columns that are modified by cubed, angled, or curvilinear shapes in opposition to each other. He nails copper sheets onto redwood structures, creating distinctive, compelling forms that he gives a natural green patina. The depth and character that this adds to the hammered metal surfaces is punctuated by the copper or brass nail heads that are used to secure the sheet metal to the wood's surface.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend the reception, and view the exhibition. The show will continue through December 18. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
