An exhibition of new works by Jim McCormick will be on display at Stremmel Gallery beginning July 8. Entitled "You Are Here; Reflections of the Viewer," the exhibition of new mixed media collages by McCormick reflects his concern with an individual's sense of self and place.
Stremmel Gallery will present New Works by Jim McCormick as part of the ninth annual Artown Festival, July 1 - 31, 2004, hosted by the City of Reno. The month-long summer arts festival features more than 200 events produced by over 60 cultural organizations and businesses in more than 50 locations city wide.
Viewers can't escape seeing themselves in Jim McCormick's new mixed media works. The mirrors that one finds in each of the artist's small, multi-layered images flash and shift according to the attitude of the viewer. "You Are Here" suggests a number of possibilities: Where is here? If you're not here, then where are you? Where do you go from here?
McCormick was born in Chicago, Illinois, and received his bachelor's and M.A. in painting and printmaking in 1960. In 1960, he accepted a position on the art faculty at University of Nevada, Reno, where he offered instruction in printmaking, drawing, visual foundations, art history, papermaking and other disciplines. After retiring as chairman of the Art Department of U.N.R. in 1992, the emeritus professor of art continued creating his art full-time. His awards include the University of Nevada Distinguished Teacher Award in 1989 and the Nevada Governor's Art Award in 1990. He has served on the Nevada State Council on the Arts from 1963 to 1970 and from 1981 to 1989. He has illustrated several books, including 21 and Over and Reliquaire, both with writer William Fox, and co-authored Brushwork Diary with historian Michael Brodhead.
From 4:45 to 5:15 on Thursday, July 8, a Conversation with the Artist will be hosted prior to the opening reception to hear McCormick's thoughts about his work, and ask him questions. The reception will continue from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, immediately following. The public is invited to attend both events, view the exhibition, and meet the artist. The show will continue through July 31. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
