On Thursday, May 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Stremmel Gallery will host an opening reception for Bay Area artist James Shay. Continuing through June 4, Shay's exhibition of new works, entitled "California Landscapes," is a reflection of the landscape surrounding his home and studio in Marin County.
James Shay creates subtly layered abstract landscapes using casein paint and prismacolor pencil. His compositions explore the familiar shapes and rhythms of Marin County's rolling hills, covered by golden grasses and punctuated by round oak trees. Sumptuously colored bands and simple shapes are layered and drawn into with prismacolor pencil to add texture and reveal glimpses of rich color in the layers below.
In 1971 Shay received his B.A. in Architecture from Arizona State University, Tempe, with subsequent studies in painting and drawing at San Francisco Art Institute from 1977-79. Shown widely in Northern California and Idaho, his works may be found in numerous private and public collections, including the Getty Museum, the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley, and the Avery Library at Columbia University in New York City. In 1999 he was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects for "notable contributions to the profession of architecture" in the area of design.
On Thursday, May 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the public is invited to the reception to meet the artist and view his work. The show will continue through June 4. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. For more information, contact Stremmel Gallery at 786-0558.
