On Thursday, October 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Stremmel Gallery will host an opening reception for artists Rudy Autio and Ken Little. The exhibition of new works will continue through October 29.
Rudy Autio has been called one of the most masterful and influential artists working with clay in the United States today. His work can be found in museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, Boston Museum of Fine arts, The American Crafts Museum, The Applied Arts Museum in Helsinki, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Shigaraki Museum in Japan. A well-known founding artist member of the Archie Bray Foundation, he is best known for his figurative ceramic vessels. He creates large lobed vessels from ceramic slabs, with gestural figures etched into their surfaces through colorful glazes.
Ken Little has been called an "artist's artist." After receiving his MFA from the University of Utah in 1972, the Texas artist has maintained an active national profile as a sculptor for over twenty-five years. He works in different formats and media, all united by a similar theme. His sculptures take the forms of the shells of iconic objects such as heads, cars, houses or boats. The surfaces of these shells are covered with found objects - old shoes, leather objects, tin cans, dollar bills and maps. These become metaphorical masks over forms, concealing an interior void - masks for our conscious actions, subconscious desires, dreams and emotions.
On Thursday, October 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the public is invited to the reception at Stremmel Gallery. The show will continue through October 29. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. For more information, contact Stremmel Gallery at 786-0558.
