On Thursday, February 8, Stremmel Gallery will host an opening reception for an exhibition of works by three Reno area artists, Ingrid Evans, Jim McCormick and Larry Williamson. Entitled "Great Basin Stories," the exhibition will continue through February 28.
Ingrid Evans, whose works in handmade paper and acrylic have been exhibited throughout the United States and Germany, has won numerous grants and awards for her work. She has described her work as incorporating "organic and geometric forms to symbolize nature and human intervention," often drawing on references from literature and art. Born in Berlin, Germany, she is a well-known and respected art instructor and lecturer, whose critical art reviews and essays have been published in many national art publications.
Jim McCormick creates intimate collages in low relief using found objects and mixed media. After retiring 1992 from a position as University of Nevada, Reno, Art Department Chair, he began to produce art full-time. His work can be found in the permanent collections of numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States. In 1990 he received the Nevada Governor's Art Award, followed by the University of Nevada, Reno's Distinguished Faculty Award in 1998.
Larry Williamson lives in Virginia City, where he built his studio after retiring from teaching high school and community college art. Wood, horn and bleached bone that he finds during his daily runs in the surrounding desert are combined with ceramic elements to produce ingenious and often humorous sculptural works. In 2003, he received the Nevada Governor's Art Award for Excellence in the Arts. His work has been exhibited throughout the Western United States, frequently in solo shows.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend the reception, view the exhibition, and meet the artists. The show will continue through February 28. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
