Exhibition Title
On Thursday, May 3, Stremmel Gallery will host a reception for their exhibition of works by seven new contemporary artists, entitled "Introductions II." Paintings by Miroslav Antic, John Belingheri, Dozier Bell, Daniel Douke, David Kessler, Gordon McConnell and sculpture by Woods Davy will be shown through May 31.

This exhibition features works by seven noted contemporary artists from across the country who are exhibiting at Stremmel Gallery for the first time. Miroslav Antic explores the power of memory by transforming personal photographs of his family, friends and youth taken into canvases veiled by semi-transparent layers of colorful stripes, polka-dots and paint splatters. Bay-area artist John Belingheri creates paintings whose deceptively simple shapes and random patterns draw the viewer into meditative contemplation. In the nocturnal, starlit skies of Dozier Bell's paintings, there's at once an extraordinary visual beauty and a reminder of more solemn concerns. Woods Davy's towering rock sculptures are joined together into large circular forms in vertical and horizontal stacks that seem to defy gravity. Daniel Douke creates illusionary objects, such as cigar boxes, sheets of steel and crushed cardboard, which appear to look like "the real thing," using acrylic paint on canvas, linoleum, plastic pipe and other materials. Landscape painter David Kessler says that his painting on aluminum "is an attempt to use the qualities of refracted light, and to have these qualities interact with the painting ... created by the use of various wire brushes, and paint, airbrushed in transparent layers." Gordon McConnell paints quintessential cowboy scenes in black and white, resembling old movies and childhood memories of the Wild West.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend the reception, view the exhibition, and meet the artists. The show will continue through May 31. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
