Beginning Monday, July 2 and continuing through July 31, Stremmel Gallery will feature an exhibition of sculpture by ceramic artist John Mason. Often created in a very large scale, Mason's work utilizes a rough geometry of intersecting planes and rotating axes that creates a sense of volume. Art writer Susan Muchnic of ArtNews states: "A major figure in ceramic sculpture, Mason emerged in the mid-1950s as one of the leaders of a revolution that transformed clay from a craft to a fine art medium."

John Mason attended Otis Art Institute at 22, after which he enrolled at Chouinard Art Institute in 1954, where he became a student and close friend of ceramicist Peter Voulkos. The two rented a studio space together in 1957, which they shared until Voulkos' move to Berkeley, CA in the fall of 1958. Considered one of the most important artists working in Los Angeles today, Mason exhibited at the legendary Ferus Gallery since the late 1950s, and has had solo exhibitions at the Pasadena Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Hudson River Museum, among others. His works can be found in the collections of museums throughout the United States, Japan and Taiwan.

Continuing through July 31, Stremmel Gallery will present the exhibition of John Mason's ceramic sculpture as a part of the 12th annual Artown festival, July 1-31, 2007, with major funding provided by the City of Reno. The month-long arts festival features more than 350 events, produced by over 100 partnering organizations and individuals in more than 90 locations citywide. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S.
