On Thursday, October 25, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Stremmel Gallery will host an opening reception for an exhibition of new works by three artists, painters Catherine Courtenaye, Dale Livezey and sculptor Randall Shiroma. The show will continue through November 17.
Catherine Courtenaye's work is based on her exploration of 19th century penmanship. She states that "vestiges of elementary mark-making (alphabets, animals, equations) serve as counterpoints to my looser treatment of line, edge and space. These paintings navigate between the rigors of perfect lines from the past and my own imperfect brushes, loaded with sensuous color." Courtenaye has received numerous honors, including an Individual Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1989, and four Ford Foundation Grants. Her work is found in numerous large collections, such as Bank of America, Hyatt Hotels, and Matsushita Investment & Development Co., of Osaka, Japan.
Dale Livezey's paintings convey the colors and phenomenon of early morning or late afternoon light on the seemingly endless landscape in his native Montana. His works have appeared on several book covers, including A.B. Guthrie's The Big Sky (Houghton Mifflin), and are included in numerous private collections, as well as the Holter Museum of Art and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Group shows include the Holter Museum of Art and the Missoula Museum of Art. In 2002, Livezey was featured at the Holter Museum of Art in "Open Country: A Twenty-Year Retrospective, Paintings by Dale Livezey."
Randall Shiroma is a sculptor who works in stone and terrazzo, creating sculpture that evokes the elements and forms of nature. His polished and patinated concrete sculptures seem to reflect the mountains, sky and water, creating their own sense of presence, revealing his search for the nature of being. He is a south Bay artist who was born in Hawaii and moved to California in 1979. Receiving both his M.A. and M.F.A from San Jose State University, he has been honored with a number of awards, including a fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation, California Arts Council, and the Arts Council Silicon Valley.
The show will continue through November 17. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. For more information, contact Stremmel Gallery at 786-0558.
