Len Chmiel 2004
On Thursday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Stremmel Gallery will host a reception and exhibition of new works by Colorado artist Len Chmiel. Chmiel’s latest paintings reflect the lush landscapes he has observed in his travels, including recent trips to Cuba, Uruguay, Mexico, England and France, as well as around the United States. Entitled “Painted Journeys,” the exhibition will continue through June 17.
Chmiel creates paintings that are fluid and personal, with sensuous atmospheres. There is an intimacy and honesty about his work and his subjects. Talking about the source of his inspiration, Chmiel says, “My gardens… and for the last 25 years or so, painting of gardens has been the link connecting the physical and inspirational beauty of the earth with the beauty of human creativity. Getting my fingers into the earth or covered with paint heals me.” This exhibition will mark Len’s thirteenth one-man show at Stremmel Gallery over a period of twenty-seven years. Past shows have sold out within the first half hour of opening.
At various times Chmiel has taught workshops, including instructing illustrators at the Disney Corporation, challenging them to think and see differently, and encouraging them to shift their perception. His work has been collected by Museums and major corporations across the United States and can be seen in such prestigious shows as the Prix de West Invitational and the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum, where he was voted the Artist Choice Award in 2002.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the reception, view the exhibition, and meet the artist. The show will continue through June 17. Stremmel Gallery is located at 1400 S. Virginia Street. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm.
